Cyr Wheel

Cyr wheel is well known apparatus for acrobatic acts. Cyr wheel is basically large steel or aluminum wheel, where performer spins around inside the wheel.

Cyr wheel also known as roue cyr, simple wheel or Mono wheel. Daniel Cyr from Canada is mentioned as original creator, however cyr wheel was known long before Daniel Cyr was born.

In 1917 in Denishawn school of dance Doris Humphrey, well known in modern dance community, choreographed and created «Scherzo Waltz» with big steel wheel as central piece.

Her dancing with this cyr wheel was based on the same techniques as modern Cyr wheel artists uses. Later in soviet union circus some performers used simple wheel to spin around the stage, before that german athlete created original wheel for his cyr wheel dance.

This mono wheel was developed by Rhönrad athletes, the Einrefen was made as a steel single wheel with footholds and hands on it.

There was very similar movements comparing to Rhoenrad such as rolls, side rolls, coin spin and spirals. Patent was never registered for Einrefen, however newspaper Die Woche im Bild attributes invention of this wheel to Rekowski and placed his photo on front page of newspaper.

You can easily find various photos online about history of Cyr wheel. This sport apparatus didn’t become popular and didn’t spread a lot comparing to German wheel. Einrefen had first demonstration of his wheel during the Championship of Rhonrad in Hanover (1960). Dr. Jorg Winkler is a Rhonrad history specialist mentioned that Einrefen was basically abandoned and forgotten after 1989.

However in modern times enthusiasts of Rhonrad remember creation of Einrefen by Adalbert von Rekowski. New reinvention of Cyr wheel becomes as popular as juggling.

New competition of the Cyr wheel was organized in July 2013 in Chicago by USA Wheel Gymnastics Federation. New sport was named Mono Wheel by IRV. New rules of the competition was written in regards to the championship called «Battle» (Arnsberg 2011).

Many cyr wheel performers from Canada was invited and coach from Quebec helped to develop new rules for the competition of Cyr wheel.
